Hydrokinetic Technologies

Hydrokinetic technologies produce power from moving water without the use of a dam. These advanced water power technologies generate electricity from the motion of waves or the unimpounded flow of tides, ocean currents, or inland waterways.

The Department of Energy’s Marine and Hydrokinetic Technology Database provides detailed, up-to-date information on wave, tidal, current, and ocean thermal energy conversion technologies and the development of advanced water power projects.  Multiple types of wave energy devices exist, and an explanation of the different types of technologies can be found on the glossary page of the DOE technology database.
