According to the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) regulations, the "Human environment" includes the “natural and physical environment and the relationship of people with that environment” (40 CFR 1508.8). While the NEPA definition of “effects” includes social and economic factors, NEPA does not actually define socioeconomics, nor does it explain how these resources are evaluated in the review process. Each federal agency writes their own NEPA compliance regulations to fit their particular programs. Therefore, the information requirements and evaluation methods for socioeconomic assessments will vary depending on which federal agency has regulatory responsibilty.
The Socioeconomic entries describes and summarizes existing information on key social and economic factors. In addition, the Socieconomic Evaluation entry provides an overview of socioeconomic assessment methods and techniques.
